Old PSPs Are Exploding As Their Lithium-Ion Batteries Degrade

PSP fans are finding out that their favorite handheld system's lithium-ion batteries are bulging and breaking from years of wear and tear.

The old PlayStation Portable is blowing up on social media - and not in a good way - as their lithium-ion batteries are bursting open from years of wear and tear. Sony's answer to the Nintendo DS was discontinued back in 2014 to make way for the newer PS Vita, but there are still players who enjoy using the older handheld for a trip down memory lane.

When it first hit store shelves back in 2004, then original PSP quickly became one of the most popular handheld gaming systems ever produced, providing players with several memorable exclusives in its ten years of existence, such as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and God Of War: Ghost Of Sparta. Even years after both it and the Vita came and went, the PSP is still fondly remembered for its catalog of games, but not every recent story surrounding the old handheld has been positive.

Earlier today, Kokatu reported that PSP owners are posting images of their handhelds' lithium-ion batteries on Twitter, showing that the power sources have begun to bulge and swell from years of sitting around unused, which in turn prevents them from fitting inside the PSP properly. Worse, some have even burst open, causing the mucky acid inside to leak out and creating a potential safety hazard. Sony has since put out a statement telling people to not play their PSPs if the battery has begun to warp, stating that said batteries have a lifespan that depletes over time.

The issue of battery lifespan and usage remains a point of discussion among video game console developers, with even the non-portable systems using them for their wireless controllers these days. Each company seems to take a different approach to the kind of batteries to use, as Microsoft has opted to use removable power units while Sony elects to have them built into the controllers themselves, a tactic some players have criticized due to concerns over the kind of issues that they are now experiencing with their PSPs.

Thankfully, it doesn't seem like anyone has been hurt by this recent wave of PlayStation Portable battery explosions, but it is understandably an inconvenience to anyone looking to dust off their old PSP for a nostalgic playthrough of Daxter. The good news is that finding a replacement power pack online is relatively cheap and easy, and there are plenty of recycling centers where the old batteries can be safely disposed of in a clean and environmentally friendly manner. Still, PlayStation fans should be wary of their PSP batteries showing signs of bloating and breaking.
